May’s Bakery and Patisserie is a small business based in Essex. It all began when our owner Hannah was a little girl, around 7 years old, she told everyone “I want to be a cake shop owner”. That is what she told everyone then, and everyone since until March 2025 when May’s became an official trading business. She was introduced to baking by her Mum who used to make birthday cakes for the family every year, and Hannah developed a love for it. The kitchen saw young Hannah experimenting with different recipes each weekend and taking them into her school for teachers, some were a hit, some not as much (raspberry cupcake I’m looking at you). Hannah grew up, finished school, completed her A-levels and achieved her Bachelor of Science Honour’s degree in Advanced Pastry and Technology at University (where she also won top student and became a freeman of the worshipful company of bakers)! Every step she took she was thinking of her future career of being a bakery owner.
Hannah wants to create a safe space for those with a nut-allergy, after seeing her sister grow up with severe nut-allergies she saw how limited her options were. Whilst not every item included nuts in its recipe, so many bakeries used them on the premises so there was the risk of contamination. A risk her sister was not willing to take. The risk between life and death. That was it, Hannah knew her bakery would use no nuts at all! No nuts are used within our kitchen and our ingredients are checked to make sure they don’t contain traces of nuts. May’s Bakery and Patisserie is a safe place where you can enjoy your favourite treats without us sneaking nuts into them for “extra flavour”. You won’t miss out with us!
